Would You Harbor Me? Thoughts On Sanctuary and Immigration
by Rev. Alicia R. Forde, Out Boulder County Board Member
“Would you harbor me? Would I harbor you?” So asks Sweet Honey In The Rock in their song of the same title. It is a genuine question of the individual, yes, but also of a nation. Would you, the United States, harbor, provide safe haven, refuge, sanctuary for those “yearning to breathe free?”
Every year, Out Boulder County honors three outstanding members of our community with the Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award, Jack and Jean Hodges Big Hearts Award, and the Ignite and Inspire Youth Leadership Award. These awards go to LGBTQ people, allies, and youth who have changed Boulder County with their service to the LGBTQ community!
We will present these awards at our annual Garden Party on June 4th, 2017.
Cinco de Mayo, is not as many believe, Mexican Independence Day. Rather, "the holiday of Cinco de Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862" (www.mexonline.com, March 2007). Longmont Celebrates Cinco de Mayo aims to celebrate this holiday as well as create a better understanding and acceptance of the Latino community.
The question of sanctuary is a salient one for our current times. What could it and should it mean? How might we think of sanctuary and intersecting identities?
The actions of the current political administration have left many LGBTQ people in our community with deep concerns, a desire for radical hope, and more motivated than ever to take action.
As local partners, Out Boulder County, A Queer Endeavor, and CIRC are hosting an event with the intention of continuing the urgent work of intersectional coalition building and community action across Boulder County.

We are creating a community to explore promoting and strengthening LGBTQ inclusiveness across businesses and startups in the Boulder County/Denver region. The event will pull together representatives from various businesses and the greater community to identify specific action steps to support LGBTQ and LGBTQ-friendly businesses.
We are in the beginning stages of exploring what this community will look like and want to hear from you! The event will include a guest speaker, targeted discussion among participants, and clear actions steps for you to get involved.
The GLBT Forever Buffs invite you to their LGBTQ Spring BBQ at the Koenig Alumni Center. Join us for this free event as we get together for some fun, games, good BBQ and an open bar. You are invited to connect with new friends and mingle with old friends as we grow our community, learn about opportunities to get involved and be part of our mission to serve students, alums and others in the LGBTQIA community. Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends and celebrate Spring with us!
