Be an agent of change!
Use your talents to strive for peace, and support survivors and their children! Share your experience and learn new skills. In our 33-hour Paraprofessional Training, you will learn about social justice issues, the dynamics of abuse, how to provide support in a non-judgmental way, and how to use your time to advance positive social change…and you may be changed in the process! Become a part of the solution as we work together to end all forms of violence.
On Saturday, May 20th, join us for a casual happy hour at historic Dickens Tavern in downtown Longmont. We’ll have the President’s room to ourselves from 5 pm to 7 pm, so come grab a drink and meet some new people!
We believe everyone has the right to be empowered and safe. That is why we are hosting a self defense class for all women and those who identify as women in a safe environment where you can have fun and learn with like-minded people. In the class you will be taught the basics for physical confrontations, as well as awareness and avoidance techniques so you can continue to improve yourself and get empowered!
Would You Harbor Me? Thoughts On Sanctuary and Immigration
by Rev. Alicia R. Forde, Out Boulder County Board Member
“Would you harbor me? Would I harbor you?” So asks Sweet Honey In The Rock in their song of the same title. It is a genuine question of the individual, yes, but also of a nation. Would you, the United States, harbor, provide safe haven, refuge, sanctuary for those “yearning to breathe free?”
Every year, Out Boulder County honors three outstanding members of our community with the Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award, Jack and Jean Hodges Big Hearts Award, and the Ignite and Inspire Youth Leadership Award. These awards go to LGBTQ people, allies, and youth who have changed Boulder County with their service to the LGBTQ community!
We will present these awards at our annual Garden Party on June 4th, 2017.
Cinco de Mayo, is not as many believe, Mexican Independence Day. Rather, "the holiday of Cinco de Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862" (www.mexonline.com, March 2007). Longmont Celebrates Cinco de Mayo aims to celebrate this holiday as well as create a better understanding and acceptance of the Latino community.
