Out Boulder, Boulder County’s community center for lesbian gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies, is pleased to announce the inauguration of the Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award. The Award is named for Clela Rorex who, as Boulder’s County Clerk in 1975, issued the world’s first legally administered marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  At the time of her foresighted and courageous action, Ms. Rorex received widespread publicity and criticism, but she never wavered from her stance that she was willing to risk her job in the service of fairness.

After 37 years, if anything, that stance has been strengthened. Reflecting on her impact in the history of Boulder’s LGBT community and her support today, Ms. Rorex says that she “grew into the role of being an ally.”

Out Boulder hopes this newly-created award will draw attention to the role of allies in achieving LGBT equality.  Aicila Lewis, Executive Director of Out Boulder, noted that 2012 marks the 20-year anniversary of the passage of the infamous Amendment 2 legislation in Colorado.  Amendment 2, which aimed to deny legal recourse to lesbian, gay, and bisexual Coloradans who encountered discrimination, was subsequently, deemed unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court and served to galvanize the LGBT community and its allies in response.   “The support of allies is an essential ingredient in our success as an organization and as a community,” said Lewis.  “That Clela stood up for LGBT equality at a time when it was highly unpopular really exemplifies what we need and value from our allies.”

2012 is also the 25th anniversary of the passage by the voters of the City of Boulder of the Human Rights Ordinance, which included protections against actions based on sexual orientation.  This Ordinance would have been repealed by the implementation of Amendment 2.  Out Boulder Vice President  Ann Noonan states, “Clela was someone who stood up for equality in our community; it is important for us in the LGBT community to remember our history and honor our allies”.

Rorex will receive Out Boulder’s first-ever Allies in Action Award at the organization’s annual Garden Party on May 20, 2012, 2:00-6:00 PM in Boulder.  The award will henceforth be given annually to an ally of the LGBT community who exemplifies the courage and commitment demonstrated by Clela Rorex.  The Garden Party is annual social event and fundraiser hosted by Dave Ensign. To RSVP for the Garden Party event, please contact Out Boulder, 303-499-5777
