All Gender Restrooms

City of Boulder Gender Neutral Restroom Building Code

The City of Boulder has updated its building code for new and renovated buildings so that all single-stall restrooms must be designated for use by all genders. This is an important step towards making restrooms in Boulder more inclusive, accessible, and safer for all, including queer and trans folks, people with disabilities, children, families, and caretakers.

We strongly encourage all businesses to get on board by updating their single-stall restroom signage to be inclusive for all genders. The code change also clarifies that multi-stall restrooms may be designated for use by all genders as well, making it easier to make all bathrooms inclusive and accessible.

Out Boulder County is working to help spread the word to our community members and business partners. We want to be a resource to help educate businesses about how a simple signage change can make a big difference, as well as to share best practices and sign resources.

Many thanks to the City of Boulder for continuing their great work towards inclusion!

Resources

People are going to go to places they feel safest, and this change helps people feel safer and more welcome! Consider listing inclusive and accessible restrooms on refugerestrooms.org*  or a similar website to increase the visibility of these safer restrooms for all. More details about Refuge below.

Refuge Restrooms* is a web application that seeks to provide safe restroom access for transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming individuals. Users can search for restrooms by proximity to a search location, add new restroom listings, as well as comment and rate existing listings.

*Out Boulder County is not affiliated with Refuge Restrooms, we are simply sharing this resource for the benefit of the community.

Check out this handout to learn more about gender inclusive restrooms. Please share it with any business owners or property managers you know!

Want to update your signage? Stay tuned as Out Boulder County prepares to make signage available to order via our online shop. Reach out to Kiar (they/them) at krickert@outboulder.org for more information on this.

Interested in learning more about the process and purpose of making your multi-stall restroom inclusive to all? Check out Boulder Public Library’s multi-stall all gender restroom project here.

Transformative Freedom Fund's mission is to support the authentic selves of transgender Coloradans by removing financial barriers to transitions related healthcare. Our application cycle is open January 1-April 1 of each year. We make funding decisions by June 15th of each year, and can start funding for that cycle immediately after an application is approved. We will fund any physical transition related healthcare from surgery, to hormones, office visits, electrolysis or laser hair removal, etc. for individuals who identify as transgender, gender nonconforming, non binary, gender queer, anyone who does not identify as cisgender. We do not currently provide financial support for mental health, but are more than happy to provide referrals for free or sliding scale options when available. We pay providers directly 100% of the time. Our priority areas for funding are trans women of color, older adults (60 and older), youth (up to 24), and folks facing significant safety concerns (living in rural areas, lack of consistent support systems, etc.). We do not require parental approval to fund youth, regardless of age, but will not provide payment to providers who are not reputable and licensed. Folks can apply every year for ongoing treatment needs, and are encouraged to apply again the following cycle if their application is not approved. We would love to be able to meet all the needs of our community, but unfortunately that is not a reality for us. At least not yet. If an individuals application is approved for surgery, but there is a waitlist that does not allow that individual to have surgery during that funding cycle, their approved amount will be held for them until their surgery date, or until they inform us that they no longer need the funds. We are always more than happy to answer any and all questions. Our email address is info@transformativefreedomfund.org and our website it transformativefreedomfund.org
